Meet Andrea Shingledecker

Garden Educator at H.O.P.E. Gardens

Andrea Shingledecker joined the H.O.P.E. Gardens team in 2021, bringing with her a wealth of experience and a passion for connecting children with nature. Inspired by her volunteer work at her own children’s school, she was deeply moved by the positive impact gardening lessons had on students. Today, Andrea combines her love for horticulture and education as a Garden Educator, enriching the lives of students and teachers alike.

Before joining H.O.P.E. Gardens, Andrea worked for nine years at a local greenhouse and grower. She also spent several years as a stay-at-home mom, fostering her family’s growth and creativity. Andrea’s background is solidly rooted in horticulture—she holds a degree in the field from Michigan State University, which she draws upon daily in her role.

Andrea cherishes the opportunity to work with H.O.P.E.’s enthusiastic staff and the bright young minds at the schools. “Our fantastic staff has such big hearts,” she shares. “The kids and teachers we work with are simply the best!” Her passion for gardening is contagious, and she loves seeing students’ excitement when they discover something new in the garden.

Outside of work, Andrea enjoys horseback riding, going for walks, and expressing her creativity through arts and crafts. She spends her days off with her family, playing games, reading, and cheering on her kids at their sports events.

Andrea’s gardening advice for beginners? “Start small. Gardening can be overwhelming, but starting with one potted herb or a small section of your yard can bring so much joy and more produce than you expect.” Her personal favorite plant is the tomato—a nostalgic nod to her grandmother’s tradition of growing and canning them. In the school garden, cucamelons hold a special place in her heart. “Kids love them! They produce a ton and are so cute!”

Andrea’s dedication, expertise, and warm spirit make her a valued member of the H.O.P.E. Gardens team, inspiring kids and adults alike to cultivate a love for gardening and healthy living.
