September brought one of our favorite times of the year at H.O.P.E. Gardens: harvest time! Students returned to school gardens overflowing with tomatoes, peppers, squash, and other fresh produce ready to be picked.

As students harvested and weighed what they had grown, they saw the results of the care that goes into a garden. They also tasted vegetables straight from their school gardens, experiencing the fresh flavors of the harvest. Many filled bags with fresh vegetables to take home and share with their families, carrying both the harvest and their pride in growing it beyond the school grounds.

The abundance reached others, too. Beautiful baskets of garden-fresh produce made their way into teachers’ lounges for school staff to enjoy and share. When the gardens produced more than we could use, surplus vegetables were delivered to local food banks, bringing fresh, locally grown food to even more families in our community.

So far this year, our school gardens have produced well over 2,000 pounds of fresh food. That is over a ton of produce making its way into the hands and homes of students, families, school staff, and neighbors.

Each harvest is an opportunity to learn, build confidence, and experience the joy of sharing. Students see how their efforts can nourish their families and contribute to their community.
September gave us much to celebrate: healthy food, confident gardeners, and a harvest that brought our community together.
