Seeds of Tomorrow

October was for seed harvesting and pumpkins in our fourteen school gardens across Wyoming. The air turned crisp, leaves tumbled through the playgrounds, and students learned the value of saving seeds for next year’s garden. They discovered that each seed holds the promise of a new beginning, carrying the memory of sunshine, soil, and care from this season into the next.

Together, they harvested the final tomatoes, beans, and sunflowers, carefully collecting seeds from each to save for next year’s garden. They learned that every seed carries a story, a memory of sunshine, soil, and care, ready to begin again when spring returns.

Pumpkins were the stars of the season, donated by Kapteyn Farms and Victory Farms, whose bright orange gifts filled our gardens with color and excitement. Students compared sizes, counted seeds, and discovered that even from a single pumpkin, hundreds of new plants can grow.

In November, the gardens will be blanketed with leaves and mulch during our winterizing lessons, tucking them in for a long winter’s nap. Our young gardeners carry home the biggest lesson of all: the cycle of giving continues, season after season. From one seed and one act of care, hope keeps growing.
