Meet Sarah Samosuik

Garden Educator/Manager at H.O.P.E. Gardens

Sarah Samosuik joined the team in April of 2021. Serving as the Garden Educator/Manager and Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah brings her passion for outdoor work, a love for children, and a deep appreciation for the earth to her role.

Sarah’s journey to H.O.P.E. Gardens was inspired by a desire to combine her love for working outside with her commitment to nurturing young minds. “I wanted a job I could truly enjoy,” she reflects. Her prior professional experience as a behavior technician in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), working with children with autism, laid a strong foundation for her educational and compassionate approach to teaching.

One of the aspects Sarah enjoys most about her work is its alignment with the rhythms of nature. “My job changes and evolves with the growing season,” she shares. “It keeps things interesting and always has me looking ahead to what’s next.” Her adaptability and forward-thinking mindset make her a natural fit for the dynamic environment of H.O.P.E. Gardens.

Sarah brings a wealth of skills and certifications to her role. She is ServSafe certified, trained in facilitating the FoodSmart Michigan Fitness Foundation program, and has completed de-escalation training. These qualifications enhance her ability to connect with both students and volunteers while fostering a safe, educational, and inclusive gardening space.

When she’s not nurturing plants or coordinating volunteers, Sarah enjoys camping, cooking, and spending time with her beloved dog. Her days off often find her exploring the outdoors, a reflection of her deep connection to nature.

Sarah’s advice to aspiring gardeners is both encouraging and insightful: “Try, try, and try again. So much of gardening is making mistakes and learning from them. Connect with other gardeners, and don’t be afraid to volunteer at a community garden to gain wisdom from their experiences. If you’re trying gardening, you’re learning about it.”

Runner beans hold a special place in Sarah’s heart. “They make any garden look beautiful, can grow in various soil types, and even improve soil quality,” she explains. She’s also a fan of lemon basil for its delightful aroma.

Since joining H.O.P.E. Gardens, Sarah has developed a profound respect for the origins of her food and the interconnectedness of earth and sustenance. “I have grown so much in my understanding of our connection to the earth and the food it provides us,” she says.

Sarah embodies the spirit of H.O.P.E. Gardens through her dedication, skills, and passion for growth—both in the garden and the community. Her work reminds us that every seed planted is a step toward learning, connection, and flourishing together.
